One of the oldest and most potent herb used in Ayurveda. A neem tree can easily survive for 200 years and its moderate use is highly recommended for longevity. Because of its versatile usage in diverse health conditions and its powerful healing capabilities, a neem tree is often named as a ‘standing village dispensary’ in the interior parts of India. Neem tree is ‘drought resistant’ and can survive with minimal water.
The rasa of Neem is very bitter and its virya or potency is cooling. The gunas of Neem are light, dry, and cooling. Therefore, its a good herb to calm down excessive pitta or kapha in the body. People with vata constitution should be careful as it can aggravate the Vata if taken in excess. Vata people can still get the benefit of New by combining it with certain herbs that are warming, lubricating and a bit heavy to counteract the cooling, drying, and lighter qualities of Neem.
If there is heat at the blood level or in rakta dhatu, Neem is one of the best herb for this condition. When there is heat at blood level then there are lots of signs and symptoms in the skin, like pimples, ulcers, lumps, as well as in the hair like hair loss, dandruff, dry hairs, thinning of hairs, among other. At the same time, there are symptoms at the nervous level like agitation, irritability, anger, headaches, among others. Neem is a wonderful herb for all these conditions. Neem is also good for excess kapha as kapha is heavy, sticky, and oily whereas Neem is light and dry.
Another important usage of Neem in Ayurveda is to kindle ‘Meda Dhatu Agni’ or (metabolism within the adipose tissues). Therefore, it improves the metabolism, supports healthy blood sugar levels, normalise the blood pressure, and improve the functioning of all the organs involve in the digestion like liver, pancreas, and small and large intestine.
Neem also has a calming effects on the respiratory passage or Prana Vaha Srotras. It improve the immune response of the body, detoxify the entire respiratory passage, and make our lungs stronger and healthier.
Contraindication of Neem:
Avoid in pregnancy
In elevated vata condition in the body
Be careful if you are already taking medicines for hyperglycemia and high blood pressure as Neem will further reduce blood sugar and blood pressure
